Language is often used to express emotions as well as attitudes and to give out ideas and
opinions. Culture and language and communication are linked because all are intrinsically
human. Language is the principal means by which people communicate in social lives and it is
used in contexts of communication. Language and culture are interconnected in many ways and
there bring about a common learning experience (Sharifian, Dirven, Yu & Niemeier, 2008).
People are able to express facts as well as ideas and events through communication and sharing
of experiences. Members of a community or social group do not only express experience using
language but are also able to use it as a base of communication. Language can also be described
as a system of signs which have a particular cultural value and speakers are able to identify
themselves and others using language. Language is therefore viewed as a symbol of social
identity and prohibiting of its use is often seen as a rejection of social group as well as that
particular culture.
In this aspect, use of language will symbolize cultural reality. Language forms part of the
invisible ritual that is imposed by culture on language users. Language, therefore, is culture's
way of bringing about order as well as predictability in the use of language by a group of people.
Language will usually consist of a systematic and conventional use of sounds as well as signs
and written symbols for communication as well as for self-expression. The main purpose of
language is to communicate with others because language serves as an expression of human
thought processes (Sharifian, Dirven, Yu & Niemeier, 2008). Language and culture are
therefore manifestations of one common origin. The language that one knows and understands is
often culturally transmitted and it is acquired through one’s membership in a particular society.
