Organizational Culture
The organizational culture of Starbuck Coffee has several primary elements that are
important to the success of the coffee house in the world. The different elements may not be very
important on their own. However, when combined, they make Starbuck unique. The elements of
the company’s organizational culture include the collaboration among workers, diversity,
openness, relationship-driven approach and servant leadership.
Servant leadership is a key aspect of the culture of the company. The idea of servant
leadership involves supervisors, managers as well as other kinds of leaders in the company
supporting the employees who occupy the lower ranks to ensure that they progress in the
company. The company has the policy of putting its employees first. Starbucks understands the
relevance of caring for the employees’ needs and welfare. Also, Starbuck’s servant leadership
concept was introduced by the former president of the company, Howard Behar who believed
that when employees are cared for and are happy, they also care for the customers and make
them happy as well (Tate, Ellram & Kirchoff, 2010). Servant leadership also involves the leaders
listening to the other employees and learning from them rather than forcing ideas on them.
Servant leadership eases the cooperation between leaders and their followers and therefore
causes the success of the organization.
Starbucks also implements the relationship-driven approach. The approach involves
ensuring that members of the organization maintain warm as well as friendly approaches among
themselves and as well as with the customers of the coffee shops (Tate, Ellram & Kirchoff,
