their leadership approaches. Martin Luther King Jr. is one such renowned and generally
acknowledged leader recognized for his leadership and civil rights activism. This essay discusses
leaders’ traits, behavior and styles, and recent leadership approaches using Martin Luther King
Jr. as the point of reference.
Traits and Personality
Luther’s effectiveness as a leader is to a significant extent attributable to his leadership
traits. These traits include his ability to inspire others, persistence, commitment, ability to
pioneer change, and determination in working towards one’s vision. His famous 1963 speech ‘I
Have a Dream,’ for instance, is an example of his inspirational personality. In the speech, he
inspires hope particularly among the black community encouraging them to work together
