The research exercise is designed to familiarize the student with the technique of note-taking and documentation. Choice of topic must reflect the readings from this unit and will typically revolve around either food waste or agricultural workers’ conditions (subject to the advice and consent of the instructor). Research must utilize a minimum of five approved sources and the completed paper must be preceded by an annotated bibliography and an outline/synopsis. The overall grade for the research paper will be broken down into three parts: Proposal/Rough Draft, Annotated Bibliography, Final Draft. For the proposal, student is required to choose a topic, propose legislation or policy related to that topic, outline effects of the legislation or policy, identify stakeholders and their positions, justify why this solution is best, and identify two potential sources. Food wastage is a major problem that poses a significant challenge to the United States of
America. In the United States about a third of the food that is produced is wasted because it ends
up in as garbage in dumpsites. Food wastage is considered as a problem because as there are so
many people in the country who are food insecure. Secondly, throwing away food is a real
problem because it results in environmental degradation and pollution (Harper, Harper &
Snowden, 2017). As a country, a lot of resources are used in generating the food in the country
and therefore disposing of them without using them shows that we are wasting our resources and
energy. Food wastage is a bad practice that should be eradicated with all possible strategies
possible and legislation aimed to reduce it should be established.
For the food wastage problem to be eradicated a policy or legislation has to be put in
place to ensure that the regulation is effective. For instance, there should be a policy that
prohibits people from throwing away food that is in a good state. The government should create
an organisation that collects excess food and distributes to those who are food insecure. The
organisation should also ensure that those who buy excess food products and end up throwing
