Environmental DUE AS LISTED ON COURSE SCHEDULE Engineering Objectives: 1) Learn the lay-out and configuration of a wastewater treatment plant using secondary treatment and providing NPDES compliant water in a POTW. 2) Explain the processes used in general for waste water treatment plants and compare to in-class discussions on wastewater treatment. Purpose: Visit to an operational wastewater treatment plant of the City of Tyler (Southside Plant) After your trip to the Southside Treatment Plant you should have a better understanding of the lay-out and function of a waste water treatment facility Deliverable: Individual Memo: For this lab exercise you will need to develop a memo including of what you saw and discuss the technical aspects of waste water treatment from collection into the plant to final discharge into the receiving body of water. Mr. Mike Schaub is the Chief Operator and he will most likely conduct our tour. PLEASE NOTE: Mr. Schaub has provided specifications about his plant and includes many of the values/parameters suggest below; those you will need to calculate. I will give you constants needed for calculations after the tour. Your INDIVIDUAL memo content includes but is not limited to the following: 1. What is the capacity of the treatment facility and what is the current demand? 2. How much of the city population does the plant service? 3. Is the majority domestic, commercial or industrial? What the differences are in streams (residential commercial or industrial) would the plant have to consider? 4. What are the general characteristics of the waste water entering the plant? 5. How does the equalization volume compare with design parameters given in your text and as discussed in class? 6. Evaluate the primary and secondary sedimentation tanks with respect to key design parameters (detention time, overflow rate, solids loading and weir loading. 7. What level of treatment is present in the facility (pretreatment, primary, secondary, tertiary) 8. Return sludge volume and concentration. 9. Provide or calculate at least four specific design parameters (e.g. MCRT, Oor Oc. volume of aerobic basin, clarifier volumes and flows, chlorine contact specifics, sludge return flows etc.) NOTE: The parameters you can choose for this section of your memo are numerous. You only need to choose four. Preferably and advisably NOT the same four you get from the person you copy this assignment from! 10. Calculate the required mass of sludge to be wasted from the activated sludge process considering the appropriate data for (MLVSS, kinetic constants observed to theoretical (provided by instructor if requested) detention times and volumetric flows) 11. What are the current NPDES permit levels? 12. Your assessment of the final character and standards achievement for final effluent into receiving surface water. What is this receiving water and what are the standards for the character of this body of water?
