THE GIFT OF THERAPY

2

Over the recent past, the field of therapy has become integral in the contemporary
society. This is because of the ever-changing nature of the society where the pressure in families
and workplaces have increased causing stress and depressions. Therapy, therefore, serves an
imperative role when it comes to stress and depression. The book, The Gift of Therapy by Irvin
Yalom explores the area of psychotherapy in details.
Summary
This book examines the field of therapy in details. The author, Yalom gives advice to the
new generation of upcoming therapists on how well to indulge in their work to establish a good
relationship with the client. Ideally, the book talks about how one can become a good therapist
and the way one is supposed to relate with the client for this good relationship to occur. The
book looks at the engagement of the therapist and client and how the therapist is expected to
support and understand the clients for there to be a good outcome. From the book, there are some
parts which speak volumes. For example, as a therapist, it is good to be authentic and admit to
mistakes. This is one of the points that is captured in the book. Therapists are humans just like
any other person and as such, they make mistakes (Yalom, 2010). To this end, it is paramount for
them to be original in their work and admit the mistakes they make when one is offering service
to the client. According to this book, any endeavor of covering up an error is not good because
the client will in one way or another realize that his/her therapist is not open and honest with
him/her. As such, this leads to a negative impact on the therapy.
