Module 02 Written Assignment - Power of Socialization Interview
In a 1-2 page essay, based on your interview and your personal experience, discuss the role that individual played as an agent of socialization and explain how that individual affected your socialization and your values, beliefs, or goals. In your essay, include at least one direct quote from your interview and use at least three concepts from the Module 01 or Module 02 content; highlight these concepts in boldface. Examples of concepts include primary and secondary groups, gender socialization, re-socialization, social class, roles, in-group, out-group, looking-glass self, group conformity, achieved or ascribed status, norms, values, and so forth.
Include a brief introductory paragraph as well as a concluding paragraph that sums up your key points. Do not write in a question and answer format, rather summarize and analyze your interview in narrative form. Make sure your paper is in APA format, double-spaced, with a title page.

University of California Irvine The Menace II Society Film Essay
The assignment is to choose and apply THREE of the following theories: differential
association theory, control-bond theory, labeling theory, or strain theory (choose three out of these
four theories). Important Note: There are other theories of deviance covered in the course material
(textbook, lecture); however, I have narrowed it down to these four theories to choose from for this
assignment. However, you should think critically think about how you can apply the other theories to
the film as we will discuss this in the related discussion board forum associated with this assignment.
• Apply the key terms/concepts and research/study data that were presented in the online lecture
(Deviance and Social Control Lecture) and in the chapter textbook (Deviance Chapter) to specific
examples from the film. It is required that you apply the key terms and research/study data associated
with each theory that you include in your paper to specific examples from the film. Begin each paragraph by defining/explaining the theory in your own words. Explain the theory in no
more than three sentences.
• Provide specific examples presented in the film that relate to the theory. You must include a
MINIMUM OF THREE specific examples (not general examples) from the film for EACH theory (this is
the minimum number of examples, feel free to exceed the minimum). This means that your paper will
include at least nine specific examples from the film (three examples in each theory-focused paragraph
and three theories for a total of nine examples).
• Be thorough and thoroughly explain how the theory applies to each example included. Explain
application of theory.
• Apply the key terms/concepts and research/study data associated with each of the theories to the
specific examples from the film throughout your analysis (do not just note the terms in your definitions
of the theories, give specific examples of the key terms/concepts). It is required that you apply the key
terms associated with each social theory.
• Bold all key terms, theories, and research data included in your paper. Bold terms and research data
when you apply them directly to the examples from the film. Do not bold terms when you are merely
explaining the theory.
Paper Organization:
• Your name and the course information must appear in the upper left-hand corner of the first page of
your paper. Include a paper title (centered). There should be some space on the top of the first page
of your paper to the right of your name and the course information before your paper title for me to
type in comments/feedback.
• Papers must be in essay format (no bullet points or subheadings).
• INTRODUCTION: Begin your paper with an introduction/introductory paragraph which explains the
nature of the assignment, introduces the film, includes a thesis statement (one or two sentences that
states the focus of your essay/paper and tells your reader what the essay is going to be about), and
states the specific theories that will be included in your paper (list the theories in the order in which
you will cover them in your paper). Include key terms and concepts where necessary in your
introduction.
• BODY OF PAPER: The body of your paper should consist of three main topic/theory-focused
paragraphs, one paragraph for each of the three theories of deviance that you are including in your
paper (long paragraphs are acceptable and expected). Begin each main theory paragraph by
defining/explaining the theory in your words. Include, discuss, and analyze each of the examples
presented in the film for each theory. Each theory-focused paragraph must include a minimum of
three specific examples from the film that directly applies to the theory, this is the minimum, feel free
to exceed three examples. You must also apply each of the key terms/concepts and research/study
data associated with the theory – directly apply the key terms and research data to the examples
from the film. It is required that you explain application, explain how the theory, terms, and research
data specifically apply to the examples from the film.
• CONCLUSION: Conclude your paper with a conclusion/concluding paragraph. Restate your thesis,
reinforce the main idea, and discuss the sociological perspective of deviance. Include any final
thoughts on the topic. Include key terms/concepts as needed.
• WORKS CITED: It is required that you include a works cited page citing the sources utilized (film, online
lecture, and textbook). It is only required that you utilize the film, online lecture, and the chapter on
deviance in the textbook for this assignment (no other resources are needed to complete this paper
assignment). The works cited page should be the last page of your paper, on its own page. If your
paper does not include a works cited page your paper will be considered plagiarized as indicated in
the rules of plagiarism (and no points will be earned). You MUST cite each source correctly. I have
posted specific information and resources on how to cite sources correctly including specifics on how
to cite the online lecture (Modules Page; “Paper Assignments General Information”).
Other requirements:
• Each paper must be typed, double-spaced, and 12 font.
• Your name and the course information must appear in the upper left-hand corner of the first page.
Leave space on the top of the first page of your paper for me to type in comments/feedback.
• Include a paper title (your own, original title for the paper, not the title of the paper assignment). Title
should be centered on the first page.
• All use of application must be bolded (bold the titles of theories, each sociological term/concept, all
use of research/study data or statistics; do not bold entire sentences).
• In some instances you may use quotes from the film as examples and to explain your application and
analysis, all other information should be in your own words. When quoting the film make sure you
put in quotation marks and cite the film. Review class policy on plagiarism (syllabus).
• Paper must be saved in the correct format (.doc, .docx, or .rtf; if you have a Mac computer you will
likely need to save your paper in rich text format).films names are : Menace II Society OR Freedom Writers
