CREATIVE WRITING
Silas Zobal
In the unraveling and thriller novel, “The People of the Broken Neck”, Zobal has built
strong characters and has given each the ability to create instabilities and doubts in our minds.
Dominick Clarke Sawyer is a good man who has been damaged by the war he had combat in
Iraq, Afghanistan, and Kosovo. His returns during deployments were followed by increased
stress, uncertainties, and arguments. A husband to Sarah and father to fifteen-year-old Clarke and
eleven-year-old Kingsley he tries to reclaim his family and home. However, on his last
deployment, Dominick wakes up to find his wife gone and lies to his children that their mother
was to be away for a while. The child welfare gets involved, and the deputy sheriff is sent to their
home and also happens to disappear. Desperately wanting to protect and keep his family
together, he flees with his children. In his quest, they move from Maine to Illinois where they are
joined by an emotionally damaged girl and finally to Washington State.
I noticed Kinsley keeps her heart open to love despite the fears, ears, and pain while
Clarke is very protective of his sister. The introduction of a second protagonist, FBI Agent
Charlie Basin, makes the novel more interesting. He starts to complicate his mission when he
starts to see his struggles reflected in Dominick's life and understands his plight. The more I read
this novel Zobal reveals his unique power of a writer by his description such as "a pale fog began
to gather against the ground and catch at the edges of things" and his exceptional ability to
immerse his readers. He also makes his readers fully identify with the characters.
