3. Final Project: A 3-5 page final paper is due by electronic submission (on Discussion Board) the Friday of the week following our last session. Paper topic must relate to the course but is otherwise open; it may concern a single writer, a selection of writers, or a general writing topic that came out of course discussions and references the semester's readings). Your paper should DEFINITELY engage the unique aspects of this course. I do NOT just want an expanded book report on one book you read for this semester, or worse yet a pastiche of reviews you find out online about one of the books. Your paper for THIS course should definitely reference the opportunity you had to hear the authors read and to speak with them. Not infrequently students find their own creative work affected by the writers they come into contact with in this course. Creative responses are permissible but must include a prose analysis of the relationship between your own new work and the aspect of your course experience that inspired the work. The prose analysis should be at least 250 words. Students wishing to do a creative final project should touch base with Prof. Gelineau (in person or by e-mail) before proceeding, Just to be clear, when I say the papers must relate to the course, I mean that the readings and conversations should be referenced and your own observations and insights should be included. Just giving me a biographical report on one or more) of the writers with a synopsis of one of their books would not be course-specific. A paper like that you could write just by googling the writer. Your final paper should reflect YOUR participation in the course. Final papers must be typed. Should average 250 words per page (the average for double-spaced, normal margins, 12pt Times New Roman, no double spacing between paragraphs). Submit by the due date on the Discussion Board forum for final papers. Books Here is a listing of books by our visiting authors. A selection of these books is available upstairs in the trade book section of the campus bookstore if you have them, an associate can help you find the display for the Readers' Series books). Choose at least one from each writer (for the Zobal/ Santalucia reading, you ma book by either of the two readers. Quincy Troupe has several children's books--it's a good topic for us to discuss but reading one child's picture book is not suft purposes. Contact me if you have questions about that. CREATIVE WRITING
Silas Zobal
In the unraveling and thriller novel, “The People of the Broken Neck”, Zobal has built
strong characters and has given each the ability to create instabilities and doubts in our minds.
Dominick Clarke Sawyer is a good man who has been damaged by the war he had combat in
Iraq, Afghanistan, and Kosovo. His returns during deployments were followed by increased
stress, uncertainties, and arguments. A husband to Sarah and father to fifteen-year-old Clarke and
eleven-year-old Kingsley he tries to reclaim his family and home. However, on his last
deployment, Dominick wakes up to find his wife gone and lies to his children that their mother
was to be away for a while. The child welfare gets involved, and the deputy sheriff is sent to their
home and also happens to disappear. Desperately wanting to protect and keep his family
together, he flees with his children. In his quest, they move from Maine to Illinois where they are
joined by an emotionally damaged girl and finally to Washington State.
I noticed Kinsley keeps her heart open to love despite the fears, ears, and pain while
Clarke is very protective of his sister. The introduction of a second protagonist, FBI Agent
Charlie Basin, makes the novel more interesting. He starts to complicate his mission when he
starts to see his struggles reflected in Dominick's life and understands his plight. The more I read
this novel Zobal reveals his unique power of a writer by his description such as "a pale fog began
to gather against the ground and catch at the edges of things" and his exceptional ability to
immerse his readers. He also makes his readers fully identify with the characters.
