  • The critique should be based on the guidelines for grading. Comment on each category and without actually assigning a grade, provide specifics as to the presenter’s competency in each area.
  • Particularly in speeches 2, 3 and 4, the introduction is very important. Does the speaker get your attention? Don’t just say “yes,” but describe how they do so.
  • You are encouraged to include in the Peer Critique the purpose statement that you hear in the speech. Do the main points match the purpose? If you don’t hear a purpose, be sure to mention that in the critique.
  • Comments should be specific. Writing that “the introduction was good” says nothing. What made it ‘good’? Give clear examples.
  • What still needs work? No speech is ever perfect, so be sure to focus not just on what went well, but what still needs work.
  • Be sure to consider class notes when completing critiques. For example, when addressing a student’s presentation style and mechanics, think about what was discussed in class, such as volume, rate of speech, inflection, reading vs. presenting, and eye contact---just to name a few!!
  • Always record the time of the presenter’s speech. If the speech goes below or above the time requirement comment on why this may be (i.e. perhaps the speech was long because too much time was spent in the introduction, or maybe the speech is short because they only address 2 main points instead of three.
  • Comment on your ability to follow the speaker’s outline, even though you won’t be looking at it. Do you hear transitional sentence between each of the sections? Can you tell where the introduction ends and the next section begins?
