Facilities management
The hospitality, tourism and events industry is quite a fascinating industry and
also an ever changing field. Facilities management refers to the application of total
quality techniques in order to improve the quality and add value to the industry. It also
aims at reducing the risks involved in delivering the reliable support services to the
people. The integration of facilities management in the hospitality, tourism and events
industry has been at the forefront of a global transformation. Facilities management has
played a key role in fuelling an ultimate guest experience for this industry thus propelling
business continuity. The ultimate benchmark for the quality of facilities management
implementation starts right from the asset maintenance, lifts, plumbing, room service,
security, just to mention a few. Management of these facilities has become an intrinsic
part of the management of this industry. In times where the profit margins are remarkably
decreasing and the competition is stiff, every competitor seeks to develop better strategies
for the management of facilities. As the technology has continued being more of a vital
part in todays society, operation of hotels has become more complicated thus the need for
third party operators. Take for example the lodging industry which has been affected by
the pressure of room rates as a result of the availability of internet marketing which has
led to an increase in competition.
In most countries, take for example in Malaysia, tourism is an effective means of
increasing export of domestic services and it also promotes the use of domestic products
and goods. However, one of the major problems facing this industry is the provision and
maintenance of facilities mentioned earlier thus the facilities management could be
implemented as a way to solve these problems. With high expectations from rate payers,

there is an urgent need for qualified and professionally trained facilities managers. If the
facilities management is poor, then it gives room for a negative impact on the local
authority’s performance. From a customer’s perspective, facilities management has been
inwardly focused and it hasn’t been spending enough quality time to understand what the
customers expect from them or rather need. This has therefore affected the industry since
businesses prefer working with providers their operations and can use this information to
add value where it matters the most. Development and realization of a viable strategy for
the management of the facilities include a requirement analysis, development of solutions
and implementation of solutions. The facilities management industry continues to evolve
from time to time thus the need to attract a diverse mix of talent in order to face the
challenges present and those expected in future.
Outsourcing
Outsourcing refers to the practice used by companies to reduce costs or improve
efficiency and involves the practice of handing over control of public services to private
enterprises. The practice of outsourcing has been gradually increasing in the hospitality industry
over the years. With payroll being the largest cost center in the hospitality industry for almost all
functions, any opportunity that involves outsourcing functions that can be performed offproperty to lower salary areas is attractive. Outsourcing has its advantages as well as its
disadvantages, some of the advantages being that the contract can be terminated at will or after
thirty days’ notice. One doesn’t have to own highly specialized equipment that doesn’t even get
used everyday etc. during outsourcing in the hospitality industry, linking up with the service
provider is vital. The hotel operator needs to ensure that the cost savings made are not at the

expense of quality, reliability and flexibility of keeping the service in house. Key considerations
for the outsourcing agreement include;

Apportioning risk and liability.

Performance standards that are clear.

Transferring or sharing of risks.

Protection of the brand, etc.

Here are some of the challenges that the hospitality industry faces during outsourcing;
Security- this is one of the biggest challenges in the industry as data leaks have become a more
common occurrence which affects the industry negatively thus bring...
