Description

Approximately 5-7 pages

expected. Choose three articles from eligible readings in the Spradley & McCurdy Reader

(Articles 5, 8, 12, 16, 17, 18, 22, and 26) and for each describe two theoretical perspectives that

apply to the article (chosen from the theoretical perspectives discussed in Chapter 1 of Miller, in

the class handout, and in class). Back up your theoretical interpretation of the articles with

evidence

from the articles. Provide explanations of passages and where you feel appropriate,

provide

brief

quotations. Use anthropological citation format (to be discussed in class) to

identify source locations within articles. Make sure you do not choose the same two perspectives

for any two articles. (You can use any one perspective no more than twice in discussing the

Theoretical Perspectives in Anthropology
Theoretical perspectives refer to the set of assumptions that are informed by theories
made by anthropologists in the past and they are used as a lens of researching and understanding
communities. As a lens, a theoretical perspective may either focus or distort the view that an
anthropologist adopts. Furthermore, it may also serve as a frame of either including or excluding
particular information that is obtained from anthropological research. The importance of
theoretical perspectives, therefore, is the fact that they organize the ideas and thoughts of an
anthropologist and also make them easily understandable to others. Without a theoretical
perspective, therefore, ideas communicated would be disorganized since anthropology is a wide
field. Not only do theoretical perspectives allow anthropologists to organize their ideas and make
assumptions but they also guide the formulation of questions in research, the research design,
and also the analysis of results obtained.
Article 1: Forest development the Indian way by Richard K. Reed
This article describes the Guarani Indians and how they managed to live in the forests of
Southern South America while ensuring that a biodiversity balance existed. Essentially, the
article explains an example of an indigenous community which survived in the forest without

to Miller, “cultural materialism attempts to learn about culture by first examining the material
aspects of life” (Miller 2017: 8). That way, cultural materialism first focuses on the materials
valued and used by the community as a way of showing their attachment to those materials. In
this article, the materialism approach focuses on the value of the forest to the Guarani people and
how they use it responsibly.

3
Cultural materialism as a theoretical approach is first seen in the way the author describes
the sustainable development and the unique commercial system that he discovered from this
community. Therefore, the author fi...
