DEMOCRACY AND RELIGION IN ARAB WORLD

2

Introduction
What is the effect of religion on democracy in the Arab world? Integration of technology
in Arab countries has been highly a significant challenge and thus understanding why it is difficult
to integrate democracy in Arab countries has created a different level of focus where there has
been no significant understanding on the exact cause to the existing situation. Democracy provides
a greater focus on freedom and human rights support as well as equality within the society. The
concepts of democracy are largely differently applied within Arab countries and thus provide a
very different level of understanding where it is possible to have an understanding on the best
possible understanding on the existing factors that influence democracy. It is important to
understand that past studies have linked lack of democracy in Arab countries to some factors
including a form of government, religion and the influence of the wealthy in the society who
exploit the existing loopholes within the government for their gains in these countries. This
research, therefore, focuses on a specific aspect where there is need to understand how religion
influences democracy in Arab world. Therefore, to obtain accurate results, the study will
incorporate a cross-sectional descriptive study design, which will be essential in providing a
greater understanding on the research question that has been integrated into the research.
Problem statement
Egypt has been one of the few Arab countries that have made significant changes especially
in seeking to create a highly diversified country through implementation of various policies. In
Egypt, people fought hard to overthrow the authoritative regime of Hosni Mubarak to liberate
themselves from oppression. Thus, Egypt played an integral role in Arab Spring where they sought
better governance through adoption to democratic principles of governance. However, despite
significant attempts to create a more democratic society, it has been very difficult for the country

to develop a greater focus and understanding where it would be possible to implement these
policies. The impeding factors that are in place, which are detrimental to the well-being of a
democratic Egyptian society form the basis of this research.
Egypt is an Islamic country, which adheres to all aspects of religion, and thus it is
important to understand the implications that religion is having on the overall development of
democracy within the country. A significant understanding on the existing relationship between
Democracy and religion will provide a well-engaged environment where it is possible to develop
a greater understanding where it would be possible to achieve focus on better strategies where
these elements can be engaged to create a more diverse society that adopts to both aspects of
development. The concepts of democracy and Islam as a religion are significantly different. Islam
creates a highly closed society with already predetermined laws, which create a very difficult
environment to introduce new policies, which are likely to create a difficult understanding on
important policies that are essential in creating a highly revolutionized understanding on important
elements of societal development.
Hypothesis
Hypothesis is assumptions that are put in place which try to explain a given phenomenon.
It is therefore important to ensure that there is an understanding on a given aspect to have a clear
and a well-engaged understanding where it would be possible to have a better and a well-engaged
understanding of the research question that has been integrated within the analysis process.
Therefore the hypothesis that is developed in this case is based on the critical understanding that
religion in the Arab world is detrimental to the wellbeing of democracy and thus a highly religious
country is less democratic.
