Case Study - 1995 Tokyo Subway Sarin Attack from a Healthcare Prospective
Background
In June 1994, a van traveling through a suburban neighborhood in Matsumoto, Japan
released Sarin causing 600 to be injured and 7 deaths. The incidence received little attention
from the world and only had a massive coverage inside Japan. Judges inhabited the residential
homes and they were scheduled to make a court ruling on the land dispute issue. Suspects of the
sarin attack were named but none of them were persecuted (Tokuda, et al., 2006).
It was barely a year and again On March 20, 1995, another sarin attack occurred. The
chemical devices were placed in three subway lines that were planned to converge from the west
and the north of Kasumigaseki. The incidence took place between 8:09 -8:13 am. The sarin
bombs planted were five but only two were released at the station (Suzuki, et al., 1995). The
remaining were discovered after the train carrying them had reached their target zone. The sarin
bomb was intended to harm the government workers who were in the Kasumigaseki region and
the release was planned at the peak rushing hour so that it would affect many people.
Sarin is grouped with the Soman and Tabun chemicals. sarin was invented by a German
scientist before the world war. The German scientist, Dr. Gerhard Schrader discovered the nerve
gas while he was developing insecticides that were similar to parathion. He discovered sarin in
1936. The Germans stocked the sarin gas during the world war 2 but never used them
(Katzenstein, 2003).
A very small amount of sarin can kill. ...
