Question 2: Explain how you might employ the placebo response in your treatments.
I would like to begin my post by saying that this concept and lecture was fascinating to learn more about
and has given me a newfound respect for the idea of placebo (while also understanding the precautions
uphold). I have often had people who do not know much about acupuncture ask if it really works or is just
a placebo, and this sheds a whole new light on that idea for me. As Heidi quoted (Dr. Nuland) in the
powerpoint for this week, "always the purpose of treatment is only to restore nature's balance against
disease. There is no recovery unless it comes from the force and fiber of one's own tissues." (Most, 2018)
This reminds me of what we learn repeatedly throughout school (and what I strive to facilitate in all of my
treatments)--the concept that the body is wise and knows what it needs to heal, and that we are only
assisting it in doing so.
In terms of utilizing this in my own treatments, I realized that I have started this with one patient in
particular and now plan to consciously continue to make use of it to serve her highest and best good. She
is a rather stubborn older woman who is in a great deal of pain and came in unsure of what I could really
do to help her (as she is more familiar and comfortable w...
