BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE AND CASES
Introduction
Business intelligence (BI) is a framework for management decision support that
empowers businesses to understand their data, offering actionable insights to improve
businesses. It is a collection of software and database technologies (Rausch et al., 2013). It uses a
superior multi-dimensional database. BI involves acquiring data and information from a wide
variety of sources and utilizing them in decision-making (Nedelcu, 2013). In, in-depth analyses
of company data for better decision-making, models are used to analyze data. Business
intelligence simplifies information discovery and analysis, making it possible for decisionmakers at all levels of an organization to more easily access, understand, analyze, collaborate,
and act on information, anytime and anywhere. This research paper will discuss the history of BI,
its uses, the current and future prospects of BI, as well as offer a real-life case where business
intelligence is used.
Evolutionary History of BI
Historical data mining methods and tools were used in the beginning for the purposed of
strategic managerial reporting. In the 1980s, statistical methods and tools like recursive
partitioning, non-parametric regression, bootstrap plus cross-validation were used. Computer
science also developed new algorithms and neural network models at almost the same time for
rapid statistical analyses for large data-sets like smoothing and clustering. The phrase ‘data
mining’ was also coined the same time. Database bases and the idea of data warehouse also
emerged (Panian, 2012). The convergence of these concepts resulted in inferential science
expanding to larger as well as more multifaceted datasets. Since the mid-1980s, data mining has
effectively served fields like scientific research, medical diagnosis, as well as behavioral
profiling. It also entered the world of business where it converts details of data into intelligent

concepts that businesses utilize to predict the future behaviors and trends (Han & Kamber, 2001).
Businesses have for years relied on ad hoc query and reports tools to assemble useful facts from
data. However, as the volumes of data continue to increase, discovering valuable information
also becomes a scary task.
Then came the On-Line Analytic Processing (OLAP) technologies plus dimensional
