Crime
Crime is an unacceptable act that is considered unlawful by the society and is punishable
by either the authorities or the state. In most cases, an act is declared as a crime by the law that
governs a certain issue or organization and often such law also gives guidelines on how the
specific crime should be punished. The punishment could be jail term or other forms of
punishment such as fines. Other forms of sentencing include community sentencing which is a
form of separation and is given to first time petty offenders mostly but this is determined by the
court and the kind of evidence provided to the court. Each country has different types of
punishments for different crimes in accordance to their own criminal laws as defined in their
constitutions and therefore crimes such as rape, theft, and murder are treated differently in

The authorities have the mandate to set processes and procedures of averting harmful
behaviors in the future by setting laws that define was crimes is and what consequences will
befall on those who do the crime. This is called criminalization and is very important in the
society because it held in setting and regulation of morals and behavior of the people in our
society.

Columbia correctional facility is located in Columbia County in Florida. The facility has
been operating since 1992 and was only built for men. It has mixed security levels which include
minimum, medium, community and close. The facility can house up to 1427 inmates although

another prison was opened to accommodate the ever-increasing number of inmates in 2004
which is called Columbia Annex and has a capacity of 1566 inmates.
There are dangers involved in these facilities an example of such is a correctional officer
who was stomped to death in this particular prison in 2012. The prison houses men from almost
all races with the biggest number being whites and black Americans. Other races found in this
prison are the Latinos and a few Chinese.
Language used
Colombia correctional facility strictly uses English in all its activities. Since the
institution is found in Florida the acceptable language that is used here is English for all activities
unless there is an inmate who does not understand English but it is very rear and in case of such,
normally a translator is facilitated so as to make the communication with that particular inmate
possible.
Depending on the sentences given to different inmates each one has a different kind of
correction as stipulated by the court that sent them to the prison. Starting from communal
correction, minimum and medium correction procedures as stipulated by the law and serving jail

inmates with dignity and respect. Although so inmates make attempts to run away or try to hart
