MULTI-CORE COMPUTERS
Multi-core computers
Introduction
A multi-core computer is that which has two processors (also known as cores) or more on a part
of silicon (also referred to as the die). A multi-core computer is also called the multiprocessor
chip. The cores found in multi-core computers contains all the features and components of a
processor that is independent. The components include the control unit, pipeline hardware, ALU
and the registers.
Multi-core computing is, therefore, a processing system comprised of multiple cores which are
independent of each other and are combined on an integrated die.
But what led to the development of Multi-core computers? With the increasing rate of computer
uses and users, the need for computers that can multitask and save time rose. Additionally,
single-core computers needed improvement in their server or PC performance.
Single-core computers also consume a lot of energy and would experience heating problems.
This would sometimes disrupt work and result in loss of information. This demanded the
development of a more efficient processor system. Another limitation of the single-core
computer is the constraint in the parallelism’s level of instructions.
These needs hastened the improvement of single-core computers to multi-core computers. The
limits of a single-core processor, therefore, led to the development of a multiprocessor chip.
The multi-core computers comprised of many properties. Additionally, there are many types of
multi-core ...
