(2012). National Incident Management System: Principles and Practice. Sudbury, MA: Jones and Bartlett. ISBN-13: 978-0-7637-8187-3 Module 1 Discuss from a law enforcement perspective how the challenges in responding to a terror attack might mirror many of the challenges in responding to the aftermath of the 2010 Haiti earthquakes. How might the NIMS and ICS approaches be helpful under such conditions? Module 2 Discuss the core set of doctrines, concepts, principles, and organizational processes that NIMS represents to enable effective, efficient, and collaborative incident management at all levels. Which one of these stands out most to you? Why? Module 3 Response planning requires groups—ranging from local police to federal response assets—to understand one another’s roles and capabilities. Discuss specifically how the NIMS logistics concepts and principles can assist and promote this understanding. Module 4 Explain how the synchronization of efforts of federal, state, and local agencies is vital to the national effort against terrorism. Module 5 Explain exactly how NIMS provides a consistent nationwide template to enable federal, state, and local governments, and private-sector and nongovernmental organizations to work together to effectively prepare for, prevent, respond to, and recover from incidents regardless of their cause, size, or complexity, including acts of terrorism. Module 6 From the standpoint of resource management, explain how NIMS facilitates building upon existing incident management and emergency response systems. Module 7 Explain in considerable detail how NIMS is linked to the National Response Framework. Module 8 Explain in detail the value and importance of the IMSI relative to the continued viability of the NIMS concepts and principles. Written Assignments and the APA Format: The Department of Criminal Justice recognizes the value of excellence in writing for students in Criminal Justice. In part, each professor is expected to provide guidance on improving a student’s writing skills. Students are required to use only the APA (American Psychological Association) format to write and develop a scholarly paper for submission in the Social Sciences. APA has been adopted by the Department as its writing standard for all academic written assignments. No other writing style is acceptable. APA is the American Psychological Association, and the style is one of many in the academic world used to regulate the language, citations, procedure and formatting of manuscripts and other examples of writing in the social sciences. Please be consistent throughout each written paper. Refer to APA Guide under Resources on the Course Menu for APA specifics. An on-line reference for APA can be accessed at the following website: http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/ For each scholarly paper and group assignment(s), the work will be assessed using an individual grading rubric for each assignment. This tool and process helps the students identify and Professor measure the key points necessary to successfully complete written or group assignments. Wikipedia is not an appropriate source for any scholarly writing and should not be used for any assignments in this course.
