Abstract
The American popular culture presents Sojourner Truth as powerful advocate for
abolition movement as well as the rights of women. Truth intentionally omitted her right hand
that was disabled when she was making the case that black women are equally capable as white
men in order to maintain the image of strength. Ensuing arguments under this essay explore
Truth’s representations on the issues of race and gender inequity and how they still apply in
today’s society. Truth condemned gender and racial arguing that the African-Americans and
women are equally powerful and capable. She used case studies that highlighted on the
intersectional approaches to historical studies and their benefits to express her support for the
ideology of ability in order to do away with gender and racial hierarchies (Kerry Washington
reads Sojourner Truth, 2008).
