Article Summary Instructions By noon before each of our class sessions, you’ll submit a brief note about one of the selected paper via Canvas. Answer the following five questions in five bullets. The complete memo should be no more than 1 page of text in 12 point font. 1. Why do the authors say you should pay attention to their idea? To summarize what the authors are saying, you should provide the answers they would give to the following “recipe” for a surprising argument that is likely to get the attention of a reader: • The “Pay Attention to my Idea” Recipe: Previous researchers / conventional wisdom received doctrine says _________. • But that doesn’t explain ___________ (fill in the blank with some puzzle, disagreement, contradiction, or omission) • With the implications that ______________ (fill in the blank with some cost the authors claim we pay by not understanding their theory, some mistake we make, some phenomenon we don’t understand, some policy we mistakenly adopt, or some benefit we gain by understanding their theory—greater power to predict x, to understand y, to control z). Note: Most authors get the first two parts of the recipe, but some omit this third step. If they omit it, provide your own suggestion. 2. What evidence do the authors provide to support their idea? (Keep this section short. You’re not summarizing every argument or study in gory detail, you are providing a high level summary with a few illustrative details, see examples below.) 3. What’s the cleverest, most insightful, or most useful thing about this article? 4. What is one critique you have about this article? What could have made it better, or a question that you have that the authors failed to answer? Be concrete! 5. INTEGRATIVE QUESTION: Pose one question for the class that compares this article to at least something else we read this week. Bonus points for asking a question that also integrates content from previous weeks.
