What and how much do you know about Nudibranchs and Sea Slugs?

Question Description

Slugs & snails on land are very boring creatures, especially slugs which most people find disgusting. However, in the sea there are Nudibranchs which aren't much different in their biological make-up, yet they are incredibly popular among scuba divers and marine biologists. The reason for this is probably that they are usually brightly coloured and hard to find.

There are more than 3,000 different species of nudibranch in seas and oceans around the world. They come in all shapes, sizes and colours, but most are smaller than the average human fist.

How many of the following questions about these interesting creatures can you answer? Why not try to guess the answers first, then research to find out how close you were with your guesses?

1- Which language(s) does the name nudibranch come from and what does it mean?

2- What do nudibranchs eat?

3- Which animal class are they in?

4- Do baby nudibranchs look the same as adults?

5- Which body parts do nudibranchs share with humans? For example 'fingers' = no

6- Do they only live in the sea, or also in rivers and lakes?

7- How long do they usually live for?

8- Can they see, and if so how well?

9- Why are many of them brightly coloured?

10- Which gender (if either) is more brightly coloured?
