Powerful Male vs. Powerless Female.
In the society men and women have different roles, responsibilities and even strengths.
Men have very different roles from women and men are perceived to be stronger than women. In
most institutions, men have been seen to take the lead through time. In the marriage institution,
for example, men are the heads and women are meant to be submissive to their husbands. In the
job market, men take the more technical jobs such as in science, engineering and mathematics,
just to mention but a few. Nevertheless, with time, women have been seen to overtake men`s
roles and take positions and fields that have been perceived as men`s for a long time (Lindsey,
Linda 156). Kate Chopin the first feminist author of the 19th Century has brought out the issues
affecting women in society in her books such as Desiree`s baby, The story of one hour, the
storm, Madame Celestine’s divorce, just to mention but a few. In this paper, I will discuss how
men have been perceived as powerful and women as powerless from the books of Kate Chopin. I
will also discuss how the place of women in the society has changed over time, using current real
life examples.
Kate Chopin, an Avant grade feminist writer wrote at a time when women were restricted
to the private sphere of life and were denied an opportunity to take the lead. Patriarchal mindsets
dominated in America in the 19th Century. Chopin`s work inspired women to analyze their
situations from a different angle, where women are treated in a better way and not seen as the
weaker sex. In her short stories, Kate Chopin describes how women are looked at and treated as

the weaker sex in the patriarchal setting of America in the 19th Century. Kate Chopin exhibits the
private sphere where women are not worthy to embrace their feminine ideologies and voice their
passion. The domestic image in her stories shows her desire for women cornered in the homely
sphere to be able to express their selves and bring out their potential.
The book Desiree`s Baby by Kate Chopin is a perfect book to explain the theme
`powerful male vs. powerless female`. In this book, we see Armand Aubigny marrying Desiree
who was a foundling discovered by Monsieur Valmonde (Chopin 1). No one knew of her true
origin and ancestry as she was a foundling. After they got married, Desiree gave birth to a baby
who brought happiness to their marriage until when the baby was three months old. This is after
her husband noticed that the baby was not white as his appearance suggested. He accused
Desiree of not being white (Chopin, 1). He sent her away and when he was burning her
belongings, long after she had left, he discovered, through a letter from his mother to his father
that he was actually the one who was not white. Oh how powerless Desiree is depicted in this
story. Even after trying to prove to her husband that she was actually white, her husband could
not listen. He still sent her away. This shows how powerful men are even in today`s marriages,
they always have the final say no matter what. Women have been blamed for not getting children
and sent away by their husbands, who later on ...
