Description

Topic: The Legalization of Marijuana

Like a debate, a position paper presents one side of an arguable opinion about an issue. The goal of a position paper is to convince the audience that your opinion is valid and defensible. Ideas that you are considering need to be carefully examined in choosing a topic, developing your argument, and organizing your paper. It is very important to ensure that you are addressing your position on the issue and are presenting it in a manner that is easy for your audience to understand. Your job is to take one side of the argument and persuade your audience that you have well-founded knowledge of the topic being presented. It is important to support your argument with evidence to ensure the validity of your claims, as well as to refute the counterclaims to show that you are well informed about both sides

Issue Criteria

To take a side on the subject of whether or not to legalize marijuana, ask yourself the following questions to ensure that you will be able to present a strong argument:

  • Is it a real issue, with genuine controversy and uncertainty?
  • Can you identify at least three to four distinctive positions?
  • Are you personally interested in advocating one of these positions?
  • Is the scope of the issue narrow enough to be manageable?

Important Items to Keep in Mind:

1) This essay is to be YOUR position. It is okay to use first person (I) in your composition.

2) Since this is a sociology course your composition should reflect a sociological perspective. For example, what would the functionalist theorist say about your position? What purpose would your recommendation serve to the greater society (economic, politically, legally etc.)?

3) Your position paper should include only three to four justifications. These three to four areas of justification should be well developed and argued. I am restricting the number of positions so that your paper will not be a conglomeration/list of positions that are not thoroughly and thoughtfully developed.

4) Remember, you can take a position from the opposite position and deconstruct it; making the case for your position.

5) Your completed submission should be at least 3 pages, MLA will be fine.

6) You should double space your paper (if you are typing it), using a 12 point font.

provoked mostly by the contradicting research findings. There are many perspectives which
should be taken into account on the legalization of marijuana, however, in most cases, individual
motives influence the debate. Irrespective of whether the argument is framed in a medical,
political or economic sense, the main issue for concern is whether the government should dictate
this issue or it should be left to individuals to regulate their actions. The use of marijuana could
be very beneficial to the society and should be legalized in the whole country. Its use could have
some positive impacts on the society. For instance, the rate of crime may decrease when the
substance is controlled due to its legality (Lee 5). Its use in certain health conditions could affect
positively on the research.
