Advanced nursing education is critical to both quality delivery of care and clinical
competence of nurses. Quality care requires a well-educated and competent nursing workforce.
Studies demonstrate that a reduction in mortality rates, medical errors and quality positive patient
outcomes are associated with nurses prepared for graduate degree and baccalaureate levels
(Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, 2014). The American Association of Colleges of Nursing
(AACN) works in collaboration with colleges and health institutions in developing a competent
and qualified nursing workforce through the acquisition of more education to improve clinical
competency and quality care delivery (Rosseter, 2015). The AACN recognizes the nursing
programs at higher educational levels; Associated Nursing Degree and Baccalaureate Degree;
and the differences in competencies between these two programs form the basis of this essay.
