Introduction

Organizational development is a field that is interdisciplinary with contributions from
various areas to include business, human resource management, sociology, communication,
industrial psychology among others. Organizational development, therefore, has multiple
definitions due to the diverse intellectual roots that it has and what matters as it is being defined
depends on the practitioner. One of the definitions that are frequently cited is from Richard
Beckhard (1969) who was an early leader in this field. It is defined as an effort that is planned,
usually organization-wide, that is managed from the top to increase the effectiveness and health
of an organization via interventions that are designed in the organization's "processes" utilizing
behavioral-science knowledge. Organizational development focuses on interpersonal skills that
are complex since they affect the activities in problem-solving that are crucial to the
organization. It envelopes the culture, design and behavior aspects of an organization change
response and an educational strategy that is complex (CiteOps, no dates). After an in-depth
assessment of the select needs of an organization, various activities such as visionary planning,
coaching and group change processes are used to address critical areas that are necessary for
success.
Creation of the Organizational Development Design Model
It is probable and inevitable that humanity has consistently tried to improve various
issues in life though with imperfections and with exceptions that is notable. There are many
examples even from the religious literature on the utilization of consultants in decision making
about various issues. Multiple individuals are associated with the creation of and contributions to
the Organizational Development design model. One of such and the first one to be noted was
Kurt Lewin (the mid-1940s). Kurt Lewins worked with many organizations in improving their

productivity and via various consultancies, he was able to create the concepts of sensitivity
training, which led to team building, force filed analysis, feedback, action research, change
theory and work teams that are self-managed. All these are a part of organizational development
(Grieves, 2000).
