Description

For the photographic image posted online for this assignment, write a four to six paragraph paper evaluating the image and theorizing about it. Use information that you have learned from the lecture titled: Week 6 D.I.E.T. Evaluate and Theorize.

This will be the Image you will write about.

Approach this with fresh eyes, please do not research the image online until after you have written your paper, this exercise has nothing to do with the name of the photograph or who took it. If you know who took this photograph, remember that does not need to be in the paper.

Briefly describe the shot and what you feel it's purpose was. Then...

Consider looking at the Glossary Lecture when using photographic terms. Always remember when evaluating a photograph to discuss whether it is a good photograph or not, considering it's composition and it's purpose. Once again, keep in mind technology of the period in which the photograph was created, do not use modern terms here. Assume most photographs we learn about in this class were taken using traditional processes, never use digital terms unless it is apparent it might be a digital photograph.

Once you have decided whether it is good (evaluating) then you need to decide if it is art or not (Theorize).

You can describe and interpret the image briefly in this paper. Do not over Describe or Interpret in this paper.

This paper must be saved and submitted to Vericite as a PDF file only.

Former Student Evaluate and Theorize November 20, 2016 In this horizontal contemporary black and white photograph of unknown origin, we see a young woman standing outside amongst the tall buildings of an unidentifiable city. As one considers this image more closely, one might ask how successful is it in being a good photograph and can it be considered art - is it only a candid snapshot or is it something more? First, we have to ask, “What makes a good photograph?” The textbook answer, “Good composition and visual interest.” Good composition can be defined by the presence of certain elements – rule of thirds, balancing elements, leading lines, pattern and symmetry, viewpoint, background, depth, framing, cropping, and experimentation. This photo is a successful photograph because it contains many of these elements harmoniously, in addition to the visual interest created by the subject’s pose. Taking a closer look at the image we can find evidence to support it being successful. The subject is slightly off center and to the right of the frame, which aligns her to conform to the rule of thirds. The viewpoint is from below the subject with natural bright light hitting squarely on her right cheek. In the background, the many lines and patterns created by the architecture of the buildings gives the image interest. A shallow depth of field moderates the many textures so there is no competition for the viewer’s attention. The subject is looking off to the right which creates interest by leaving the viewer wondering what she is looking at and want to move their eyes that way as well. Secondly, “Is this a successful and/or important work of art?” A resounding “Yes” should be the response to it being a successful work of art but important, the answer is “No”. It is successful art but that is due primarily to its success as a good photograph. When thinking of its importance, ask yourself this, “Is this photograph something unique, new, dynamic, or intriguing?” No. We see in this photograph a perfectly coifed woman, perfectly lit, captured perfectly, and quite possibly produced for a fashion magazine. In that perfection, there is no uniqueness or intrigue that leaves the viewer wanting to know more about this the subject or her situation.

Explanation & Answer

Here you go! Let me know if you need anything changed :)

The photograph features a solemn, grayscale shot of a seemingly still body of water.
Dominated by horizontal lines, the image focuses on the clear delineation of the sky and the waters.
A visible line creates this distinction, as does the slight shifts in color that separate the two areas.
Above, where the sky stands, a hue that approximates to white will take over, covering most of the
upper half of the image. Below, under the horizon’s line, darker shades of gray can be seen. In the
water, small lines of movement can be made out, albeit barely. The see captured is not entirely
motionless, and the faint ripples in the water give the bottom half a nice texture. Though there is
not much en...
