You work for county social services, child welfare division, and you are working with Lisa, who recently had her three young children (April is 5, Joshua is 6 and Justine is 9 years of age) removed from her home for physical and emotional neglect. You arranged for Lisa to have parenting classes and individual counseling so that she can learn how to better manage her frustration with her children. You also arrange to have her admitted to a drug rehabilitation program to help her with her addictions to alcohol and cocaine. You meet with Lisa once a week to discuss her progress and you also monitor her weekly visitation with her children. Successful completion of Lisa’s parenting plan will enable her to regain custody of her children. You will continue to monitor Lisa’s progress and her children’s progress who are in a foster care placement.

  • Describe the plan you will implement to begin working more effectively with Lisa’s three children while in foster care.

The 1996 Random House Dictionary of English Language defines alcoholism as a
diseased condition caused by the excessive use of alcoholic beverages. Most people view
alcoholism and women as two mutually exclusive concepts. The idea that a woman, let alone a
mother, can be an alcoholic is shocking in today's society; which makes the image of a mother
and that of an alcoholic contradictory. This degree of judgment on women who are alcoholics
makes them feel ashamed and stigmatized, and therefore most alcoholic women do not admit
that they are alcohol addicts. The more the moral judgments against such individuals, the more
these women drink in private and refuse to seek help. A report by the National Institute of
Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) shows that there are over two and a half million
female alcoholics (Benton, 2009). For a woman like Lisa, who is also a mother, alcoholism and
cocaine addiction can take a toll on the children too. These addictions can be caused by various
things, and the children need help and support to maintain a proper state of mental health.
The use and response to drugs is different in women compared to men. This difference
causes a significant contrast in the treatment of addiction in women. The mode of treatment
differs from women's substance use that usually progresses faster from first use to dependence as
compared to men (National Institute on Drug Abuse, 2017). From a counseling perspective, a
few issues were addressed in Lisa's situation such as the cause of her addiction, the impact her
addiction had on her children, and her course of treatment.
Even though many factors cause addiction, for example, biological factors, psychological
factors carry the bulk of the factors that cause addiction. Hence from a counseling perspective,
such psychological issues were discussed about Lisa. One of the mental factors explored was

mental illness. Lisa could have been experiencing a mental disorder such as depression, which
might have caused her addiction to alcohol and cocaine. This issue was explored during therapy
to determine if it was the cause of her addiction or not. Also, the use of drugs could have been
Lisa's way of coping with her environment. External factors such as stress and financial failure
can cause addiction and were explored during Lisa's therapy to find a better way to respond to
these issues in case they are discovered as the cause of her addiction. Moreover, Lisa's beliefs
and thoughts could have led to her addiction (Horvath et al., 2013). The therapist can help Lisa
channel her thoughts and ideas into positives that may keep her from seeking relief in alcohol
and cocaine. All these issues would have been the reason for Lisa's addiction, and therefore the
cause of her addiction could have been psychological. Hence the cause of her addiction was one
of the issues addressed during her counseling sessions.
Another aspect that was addressed during Lisa's counseling was her feelings toward
herself, the impact her addictions ma...
