The Governing of the colleges and Universities of the United States is a significant aspect
in the academic arena. The modern governance of the colleges and universities of the United
States consists of the administrative officers, the board of trustees, the faculty officers, and the
president. This essay will seek to examine the evolution and development of the university board
and leadership. Through the evaluation of the University board and leadership, the essay will
structure a graphical timeline to depict how the governance and boars of universities have
changed over time.
The current governance of universities and colleges can be traced back to the colonial
period. The Harvard College was among the earlier colleges that were established in the year
1636 during the colonial era. It was formed as a public institution and it was governed by a board
of overseers which was incepted by the colonial legislature (Sav, 1986). The board of overseers
comprised of the magistrates and the clergymen who were controlled by the General Court.
However, in the year 1642, changes were made as the board of overseers were incepted
as a quasi-corporation and they were given an opportunity of controlling the college directly
(Lozano and Hughes, 2017). In the year 1650, the quasi-corporation was transited to the college
corporation. The college corporation consisted of the president, the faculty individuals, and the
treasurer. During this time, the board of overseers functioned as trustees and they were given the
power to hold property and carry out the appointment of other staff individuals and officers in
the organization.
