Abstract
This paper presents a detailed discussion of how communication principles obtained
from research can be used to foster good communication. This is achieved through the
discussion of major communication elements: perception, self-concept, and language. At the
end of the paper, I sum up the paper’s main ideas and as well relate them to what has been
learnt in class. I also talk about the various ways I look forward to improve on my
interpersonal communication.

Interpersonal Communication
Human beings differ in so many ways. Two people working at the same place could
exhibit very different characters and, in some cases, other could have some similarities. The
same case applies to students in school or any group of individuals for that matter. Each of
them is different in their own distinguished way. They think, speak, act, talk, and even
approach issues differently. These differences come about as a result of various factors. First
and foremost is one’s upbringing. Based on an individual’s cultural background, their
character, language, and social life is moulded. Religion is also another factor. With these
underlying differences, it becomes almost impossible to have communication problems. This
is the reason why it is quite normal to have societal conflicts. However, this threat to human
cohesion can be mitigated through the effective understanding of interpersonal
communication. In essence, interpersonal communication, which refers to the having of faceto-face communication with others, is a necessity of human interaction, one that needs to be
polished from time to time so as to achieve its effectiveness.
Communication is described as a process where information is conveyed from one
person to the next. For it to be fully achieved, there are a number of elements that must be
present. These are the sender, message, encoding, channel, recipient, decoding, and finally
