College Application and Enrolment Process
Bureaucracies have four major characteristics; hierarchy of positions, rules and
regulations, specialization, and division of labor. These bureaucracies have turned institutions of
higher learning to commercial enterprises that prey on those who wish to earn a degree. My
encounter with bureaucracy was during the college application process and visiting prospective
colleges to determine the best choice. I quickly learned that every college and university has
different rules and procedures that govern the application process, aptitude tests, course
selection, enrolling in extracurricular activities, etc.
First off, college education is very expensive and secondly, the quality of education does
not always match the price tag. Traditionally, colleges in the US have been mired with all
manner of bureaucracies that complicate the selection and enrolment process especially for
minority and underprivileged students. Some result to attending lower quality schools while
others go into significant debt which they pay for in their earning years.
Eligibility for financial aid is yet another hurdle that easily renders even qualified
