TDGE 11 Spring Quarter 2018
Response Paper #1 Prompt: Queer Plays
***DUE WEDNESDAY, MAY 9TH AT 11:59PM VIA TRITONED
So far this quarter we have focused on queer performances in film. For this response paper you
will turn to queer theatre. Below is a list of five plays which deal with issues of queerness. With
the exception of Cloud 9, these are all recent plays (and despite being 39 years old, Cloud 9 is
still very timely). Choose one play and write a 700-1000 word response. You are encouraged to
discuss the course’s guiding questions, but focus more on the topics the play is presenting and
analyzing.
Course Questions: Who is being represented? How are they being represented? Who is being
obscured or forgotten? Who is the intended audience? How do these performances fall into or
challenge stereotypes and established tropes?
If you are not used to analyzing a play, look in the “Additional Readings” on TritonEd, on or
after April 29th for a worksheet to help you organize aspects of the play you choose. I hope this
worksheet will be helpful.
I have also included links to trailers to productions of these plays in order to help you get a sense
of the tone and style of the play, the set and characters (Do not analyze these clips in your paper).
As with the “Genre” prompt, I will provide some tips and guidance in lecture, Week 5.
Note: All plays are available electronically if you are unable to get to a bookstore or are
concerned about a paperback being delivered in time.
I encourage you to come to office hours or email me (kraphael@ucsd.edu) to discuss the play
and your analysis as you form your paper.
Play Options:
• Cloud 9 by Carol Churchill (1979) - A complex British play about gender, sexuality, patriarchy
and colonialism. This play is for students who are comfortable reading plays.
Since this is commonly produced play, especially college productions, there are dozens
of trailers and scenes on YouTube. Here is one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?

• I Am My Own Wife by Doug Wright (2003) - Considered a “documentary play,” this is a oneman play based on the playwright’s real interviews with Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, a German
trans woman (she preferred the term “transvestite”) who lived through WWII Germany and the
post-war struggles of East Germany.
Like Cloud 9, there are many clips on YouTube. Here is one: https://www.youtube.com/

(Available as an e-book through the UCSD library, and on Amazon, https://

• Choir Boy by Tarell Alvin McCraney (2012) - The story of an African American boy’s
experience in school and as a member of his prep school gospel choir.

• Hir: A Play by Taylor Mac (2015) - A play about a family. A young vet returns home from war
to find his home very different from how he left it and to learn that his sibling is transitioning.
This is a complex play. Taylor Mac is a writer and performance artist in NYC it may be helpful
to look up clips of Mac’s performances on YouTube.

• Indecent by Paula Vogel (2017) - A play about a play. When the Yiddish play, God of
Vengeance, was performed on Broadway in 1923 the entire cast was arrested for indecency.
The play took place in a brothel and had a love story between two young women. Indecent
imagines the theatre company’s experience rehearsing and performing God of Vengeance.

Does and Don’ts:
1. Do have a creative title for your paper.
2. Do have a thesis - doesn’t have to be 1 sentence.
3. Don’t include a plot summary. Assume the reader has watched the film. Include plot details
and scene descriptions only as supporting material for larger claims.
4. Don’t write a research paper. You may do research and bring outside sources if you find that
helpful, but this should not be a focus of your response paper.
5. Do not write a 5 paragraph essay. Paragraphs are an important way of organizing arguments
but a 5 paragraph essay is an artificial high school format.
6. Provide specific examples and describe specific scenes in detail in order to support your
analysis.
7. Use proper citations in your paper.
How to read/Think about a Play
Dramatic Literature - reading a script just like a novel or
short story
Like an actor - focus on the character, view the play
through the character
example: Nathan Lane in curren production.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=yRcpyFHn8PM
Like a Designer (set, lighting, sound and costume) - how
does design relate to larger vision of the play?
Like a Director - all aspects, from characters'
perspectives, from design perspectives, creating a
unified vision of the play.
