Strighi Introduction to Philosophy Position Paper Assignment A8 page position paper is required of each student. The final draft of the essay is due at the time of the final exam. The paper must be in proper academic form, i.e., it will include introductory and concluding sections, an acceptable referencing format and bibliography. The assignment will determine 25% of your final grade. Papers possessing plagiarism will receive an F grade. Students are encouraged to discuss with me their topic choice and research strategies. Successful completion of this assignment requires that the student defend a carefully delimited position within the context of one of the general philosophical problem areas discussed this term. The defense can be positive or negative. That is, it can aim to establish either the truth or falsity of a position or theory. An effective defense will include: a. a precise statement of the thesis--i.e., a statement explaining exactly what you aim to reasonably establish; b. positive argumentation/evidence in support of one's thesis; c. argumentation against competing positions; d. anticipatory response (counter-argumentation) to possible objections to your thesis. It should be clear from the above that the body of your essay should consist virtually entirely of argumentation. N.b., the Encyclopedia of Philosophy, ed. Paul Edwards, is a highly useful Es reference tool. You may consult it to acquire familiarity with the specifics of almost any topic relevant to your research. AV A second valuable source is Masterpieces of World Philosophy in Summary Form, Frank Magill, ed. Consult this work for excellent synopses of many of the major treatises in philosophy. According to St. Thomas, therefore, God is: Ipsum Esse Subsistens, i.e., Subsistent Being Itself Bertrand Russell's 'Argument from Ordinary Language
