The world of Dark Age Greece was a period of overall instability but it played an
instrumental role in inventing the Greek society and its values. This period is also called the
Homeric age due to Homer’s poems which capture events during the period and his contribution
to Greek poetry at the same time. Understanding the values of the Greeks during the Dark Ages
is crucial to understanding the overall value of life and the dynamics of the society in the Greek
culture. Furthermore, by understanding the values of the Greeks, it is possible to understand the
different activities that they were involved in as captured in Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey.
Homer’s poems depict particular values through the character traits of notable characters which
are seen as the ideal in the Greek culture. Hospitality, heroism, and brilliance are the three core
values that the poet Homer portrays as crucial in the lives of the Greeks during the Dark Ages.
The study of Homer’s poems guides scholars to understand the values of the Greeks from
a critical point of view of the Iliad and Odyssey. While the identity of Homer remains largely
speculation, his works mostly cover the period of war between the Greeks and Troy, the ten-year
siege of Troy, Agamemnon’s quarrel with Achilles, and the return journey of Odysseus, the King
of Ithaca after the Trojan War. These two poems, therefore, capture the Greeks during a time of
overall instability. For that reason, they are seen as capturing a time when the values of the
Greeks can be well understood owing to their conduct during these times of instability in the
Dark Age Greece. Therefore, the significance of these two poems to understanding the values of
the Greeks is that they were most likely written or narrated during the Dark Ages which were
times of overall instability and an attempt by the Greeks to consolidate themselves to form a
strong kingdom.
The first value that is seen as crucial to the Greeks during the Dark Ages is hospitality.
Primarily, in literal terms, hospitality means that a person should treat their visitors well and
