Social issues in the “Zootopia film”
The “Zootopia” film, which was directed by Byron Howard alongside Rich Moore and
Jared Bush, the co-director, is an animation film that contains light-hearted comedy taking place
in an animal world where they evolve to live collectively in a city which is enormous and
diverse. The film provides an educational plot resulting in corruption and conspiracy while
fascinating visually. The universe where the film takes place is filled with anthropomorphic
animals. The human-like animals, both preys, and predators, work, play and live together in
Zootropolis, which is the main capital that is a cleverly constructed metropolis of various
microclimates (Xue, 2016, p. 37).
Social and identity issues
Different forms of social issues are elicited in the film. The use of stereotypes mostly
used by humans in describing animals is expressed in the film not only through pun intended
jokes but also through the characters themselves. Ever since she was a little bunny, Judy Hopps,
the protagonist female rabbit, has been dreaming to join the police force. She encounters a great
deal of discouragement from her family, friends and even in the police academy as she grows up.
She gets discouraged that she is too small and that the police force is meant for big and strong
predators but this does not discourage her. Judy leaves her comfortable small hometown to work
in Zootropolis’ ZPD (Zootopia Police Department) upon finishing the police academy at the top
of her class (Xue, 2016, p. 38).
