Kristeny Discussion 1 How would you define white collar crime? White-collar crime is a crime committed for the purpose of a financial gain versus an intentional violent crime or bodily warm. A wide range of individuals can commit this type of crime; however, majority are professionals, trusted individuals, people with power, large companies, etc. Some types of white-collar crimes include forgery, bribery, counterfeiting, all types of fraud like tax, and more. Usually these crimes are related to fraud. Who are the victims of white collar crime? A victim of a white-collar crime can be any individual despite age, race, social-economic status. Other victims can be businesses, financial institutions, government, just to name a few. This type of crime can have detrimental financial and psychological impact on the victim. Are the penalties for committing white collar crime too lenient? Criminal sentencings whether in circuit court or federal court can range greatly. I agree with setting guidelines; however, I think every case should be looked at in its entirety and based on the severity of the damages is what the sentencing should be. White-collar crime penalties have always had the reputation of being too lenient. I do not necessary agree or disagree. Prosecutors do their best to build a strong case and seek justice. Can white collar criminals be more dangerous than traditional criminals? There is much controversy on this topic. White-collar crimes and traditional crimes differ in many ways. White-collar crimes are mainly driven by fraud and financial gain. Conventional crimes are often violent crimes that cause physical and/or psychological trauma. Therefore, white-collar crimes cause less of a physical damage versus your traditional crimes. However, it is still a crime and can cause catastrophic damages to our country and individuals.
