Through investigation on the local applications and costs of existing construction equipment in Oman students will be familiar with the local application of these instruments and also common problems that occurs in Oman while using these equipment. Therefore they will be able to put this knowledge in practice later in their career to select the appropriate equipment that meets the purpose required to solve a specific problem on construction sites. OUTCOMES: Apply the knowledge gained above to develop safe and sustainable solutions to site situations; Appraise the solutions developed above to propose the most desirable solution in the circumstances Present the solutions in a form which could be understood and acted on by site personnel TASKS Consider you are working in H a s s a n C o n t r a c t i n g L L C . , a medium s i z e contracting firm which has about five years of experience in executing various projects in Oman. Your company is planning to buy/rent the following list of construction equipment to improve the mobilization of a new construction project which is construction of a residential apartment with eight story building, the area includes hard soil and rocks, and the site is located with buildings surrounded. The project time-frame is fixed and format of the contract obligates your company to complete the work on the specific date otherwise you will face severe financial penalties also managing to control cost. Duration to complete all construction activities of the project is 15 months. The expected time for completing excavation is two months. (Further details of the project may be assumed in order to provide justification for the selection of equipment.) a. Machinery for earthwork excavation b. Trucks for earth moving c. Introduce the Selected equipment in minimum two models for each equipment 2. Critically evaluate all major performance criteria of equipment selected in each group with justification. 3. Add the values for criteria discussed in previous part for each model and demonstrate the differences between the models in each category 4. Provide the present price data for both purchase and rental of equipment. (Data must be accurate, Relevant and based on evidence) – you can show the price of rent/purchase of the two models from different suppliers to later justify the selection of one over another 5. Recommend which machine to be selected for this project and justify major factors that influence the choice of equipment. (Base on the information given in scenario and other assumptions regarding the project by student). One major factor of selecting the equipment is cost; therefore you must also make decision based on this factor and then justify the preference of rent or purchase of the chosen equipment. 6. Moreover investigate on applications of the chosen equipment is required in the local construction industry. You must explain how they are used in real life situation i.e., construction site. Report and describe your observations of the local applications of this equipment in Oman. Moreover state one specific problem that is common in application of this machine in Oman and discuss the possible solutions. You must provide evidence to support your observations. Instructions Choose a specific machine from one production but different models (e.g. excavator, Caterpillar , model A-2012 and model B-2013) or choose one machine from two different production but with similar applications (e.g. bulldozer JCB S130LC model and Bulldozer Komatsu D65EX ) . Caterpillar produces different models of excavator you can identify the differences between the models or similar model of a plant in different making like Caterpillar and Komatsu. You can review the brochures, and catalogues of companies that produce and sell machinery online or through contacts in contractor or consultant offices, business owners and construction sites. Add figures where ever applicable. In order to find out about costs you can contact contractors, companies or individuals who own or offer the plants for rentals or purchasing in Oman. Recommend which machine to be selected and justify major factors that influence the choice of equipment. This should be based on the information given about the site and your other assumptions (add the plan of the site). Coursework Proposal You must prepare and submit your CW proposal through the Moodle two weeks after the assignment is given to you. Proposal includes 5% of the mark. This proposal must contain the following: Title of the Assignment, Module Name and Title and Semester (Spring 2018) Information regarding your group members Explanation of your understanding about the project and tasks you shall carry out Project program (time schedule) Task allocation among the group members (you may be also specifically evaluated based on your individual responsibilities within your group) See the FORMAT of the proposal in the Assignment Important note: Students must note that Marks for the assignment will depend only on the presentation (viva). Then you must critically evaluate all major performance criteria of equipment selected in each group and compare between the two models by minimum four essential performance criteria. 4. Purchase / Rental of equipment Discuss the economic aspects which are beneficial for the company to choose either purchase or rental of equipment. Provide detail information with regards to price of purchase or rent of the two models in each group. Support your data with evidence. 5. Choice of equipment Write and discuss about the choice of equipment based on the suitability to the project provided in the scenario, availability of the equipment, costs, present market, or any other factor that you find relevant. (You can create more assumptions with regard to project to create justification for your choices of equipment). Example of factors: type of material to be handled, distance of site to important locations, geography of the site and volume of equipment to be handled, etc. (add the plan of the site). Note that cost and availability for rent or purchase is an important factor in making this decision. Note that you must justify the relevance of the major factors you selected for making your decision. You must provide reasons why this major factors influence the choice of equipment.( you must consider the current local situations in the industry and market) 7. Local application of equipment Include your observation of the actual application and performance of the equipment on the construction sites.
