RIGHTS TO SAFE ENVIRONMENT
Introduction
A safe environment is an environment that is conducive to human survival i.e. free from
toxic or hazardous chemicals, excessive noise, disposed waste, polluted air contaminated water,
polluted soils, etc. The issue of a safe environment has turned out to be a topic of discussion where
various persons, volunteers, human rights organizations, etc. have proposed several mechanisms
of achieving a safe environment. When we talk about the environment, we are simply implying
the surrounding conditions in which an individual, animal, or any other organism lives. This
environment needs to be clean and safe for the survival of any living organism. However, that has
not been the case in the current generation. Over the past decades, there has been a continued
deterioration of the environment. The environment that existed in the past few decades cannot be
compared with the one that we are living today due to extreme deterioration. The topic of
environmental pollution and protection has become a contentious issue due to the high levels of
environmental pollution that were are experiencing today despite the fact that many measures have
been put in place to combat pollution (Mank and Smith, 2013). The rising levels of pollution and
environmental calamities are alarming. This is caused by the rising pollution and the number of
industries which has led to the depletion of natural resources such as forests, water bodies,
minerals, etc. The population pressure and inadequate resources such as land for cultivation have
caused human beings to encroach into the existing resources such as forests. Therefore, this paper
aims to debate if it is feasible to have a right to a safe environment.
The right to a safe environment something that is feasible. Firstly, each individual should
take an effort of ensuring that the environment that he or she lives is safe and clean. This is the
best approach that can be utilized in the attainment of the environmental millennium goals of

integrating the sustainable development principles in the programs and policies of each nation and
reduce the depletion of natural resources, attaining a substantial reduction in biodiversity loss, to
increase the access of the universal population to clean and safe drinking water and other basic
sanitation, and to attain a substantial improvement in human life for the majority of individuals. In
order to realize these millennium development goals, every person should take a personal
responsibility of cleaning and protect his or her surrounding environment. Some of the simple
initiatives that individuals can employ in protecting the environment include proper collection and
disposal of individually generated wastes, protection of surrounding water bodies and vegetation,
planting of more trees to replace the consumed ones, minimizing the generated noise from music
devices, minimizing the use of toxic chemicals, etc. This can be achieved by ensuring that each
household properly collects and disposes of the wastes that it generates. All these strategies portray
a simple way of enhancing a clean and safe environment. This can be one of the best strategies for
preventing environmental pollution and degradation since the wastes are well disposed of safely
at the point of generation (Srivastava, 2009). In addition, this would also help to develop a good
culture of managing and disposing of the waste in the society and this would give an easy time to
the environmental protection bodies.
Additionally, despite the fact that there are various laws established both internationally
and nationally aimed at protecting and conserving the environment, making these laws effective
has been a major issue in some of the countries. The International Environmental Law (IEL) is
concerning with the protection of natural resources and polluti...
