Description

Description:

This assignment asks you to identify a renaissance work of art using the time line as indicated in the book. Be prepared to give a very brief, informal presentation on the work and to submit a three page analysis with MLA format works cited page citing all sources used.

minimum of three page

Thesis: the purpose of this analysis is to look closely at one renaissance work of art, or do a comparison or two or two related pieces in order to better understand the renaissance itself – your thesis should reflect this. An example is as follows: The color, shapes and subject of Raphael’; s Madonna exemplify the style of High Renaissance.

Suggestions: be sure to include title, artist and date. Identify work as southern or northern renaissance and explain how it either typifies or defies the conventions of the renaissance. For those of you who choose a topic that is not necessarily a particular work, consider defining/explaining the topic (ex: golden ratio) and then describing a few examples of how it occurs in renaissance art.

Be sure to focus on the work and not the general biographical information of the artist!

Introduction to Art Renaissance Art Topics Here are some suggestions for the Renaissance art project. You are free to come up you’re your own! Just remember to make sure your topic fits the timeline as discussed in class and identified at the beginning of the chapter. Also, do not select a topic that is too large – you will just end up with a very general approach. Even the topics below can be narrowed. Please let me know via email what your topic will be so we avoid repetition. Please do not choose to analyze one work that is in the text as we may be discussing it in class! Instead use that work as part of a larger thematic analysis or comparison. Use your major to select a topic! Graphic design: how about the golden ratio, the Fibonacci sequence, or the camera obscura? Look these up as they will definitely increase your knowledge of design and art Culinary arts: food symbolism in Renaissance paintings, the genre of still lifes with food – you will love these and it is fine if you choose paintings that are a bit later than Renaissance Plague – representations of the plague in renaissance art – including but not limited to “Dance of Death”. Famous artists such as Titian, Brueghel, Donatello etc – if you choose this option, either analyze one work in depth and explain how it exemplifies both the renaissance and his/her style or choose 2-3 works and show the similarities between them. For example, Van Eyck is known for his incredibly rich colors and representations of fabric and texture. Portraits – the renaissance marks the rise of the portrait – narrow your focus here and choose an interesting aspect of portraits – fashion, jewelery etc. Consider one portrait artist and perhaps look at two or three of his/her portraits for themes or changes throughout their life Woman artists – do a search and see what names come up! For this topic, it would be interesting to see how they became an artist in a time when most women did not and also to see what they focused on. A theme such as nature, science, medicine etc as seen in a few renaissance paintings A character such as David (think of the sculptures we looked at in class) compare/contrast different interpretations Representations of Mary – she becomes a very popular figure in renaissance art – known as the “Cult of Mary” – the art suggests artists become interested in her as the human figure in the Biblical story – look for different representations Angels and Demons (narrow) the renaissance leaves the simplistic representations of medieval times behind and gives us a complex range of angels and demons - trace one such image . . . Figures from Myth – Italian renaissance reimagines the greek gods and goddesses – look at the images of one of them – how are they different from the ancient images? Compare different portrayals of Zeus, Venus or other mythical figures? DaVinci – his journals (narrow) - any one of his many interests as seen in the journals . . .

Art Analysis: Venus of Urbino by Titian, 1534
The Venus of Urbino is arguably the most famous oil painting by Titian, and also the
most provocative. Many art scholars believe that the painting was started by 1532 but was not
completed until 1534. The picture was painted for the Duke of Urbino and was possibly made to
celebrate his 1534 marriage (Friedberg 13). It belonged to the school of Venetian Painting in
High Renaissance. Though the painting was based on several other previous artworks of Venus,
primarily The Sleeping Venus by Giorgione, the depth, and talent exhibited by Titian's version
was unprecedented. Many scholars believe that The Venus of Urbino was one of the paintings
that triggered the growth of controversial images in Western art, including Edouard Manet’s
Olympia and Goya’s Nude Maja (Cole 23). Without a doubt, Titian’s The Venus of Urbino
typifies the fundamental concepts of renaissance through a focus on precise human anatomy,
individualism, depth, and remarkable use of color.
High Renaissance works were uniquely precise of the human anatomy. Venus of Urbino
depicts a naked young woman on a bed. The background features the luxurious...
