The increase in life expectancy in the United States has subsequently resulted in a high
number of senior citizens in the country. The actual number of senior citizens in the United States
is not known but it is estimated that at least 12 million seniors depend on long-term services of
care for their livelihood support. Long-term care comprises of a range of services and support that
a person requires in their household for their everyday life such as nothing, dressing, meal
preparation and transferring one from or to bed or wheelchair. Paying for such services proves a
financial burden to the family caregivers and it is equivalent to a full-time job. Medicaid and
Medicare services do not substantially cover long-term care (Brown & Finkelstein, 2011).
However, the enactment of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) introduce
enough coverage for the elderly and proved beneficial in the following ways:
