History of democracy in Greek polis

Democracy of the Athenians began in Greek’s city state called Polis in the fifth century.
As such the city of Athens and its neighboring regions like Attica developed democracy for
governance. After these cities developed the leadership through democracy, other city-states
followed after Athens and develop the same leadership approach (Raabb & Suleiman, 2013). The
democracy that was established in Greek was a direct democracy where the citizens were
allowed to directly vote for any laws that were being crafted as well as executive bills. Even so,
voting was restricted to male adults who were citizens of Greece. Therefore, slaves, women,
children, and non-citizens were not allowed to vote.
This democracy has been appreciated so much by the Western nations, and in fact,
