Abstract
Companies are working hard every day to expand their business operations. However, it is not
easy for them to expand without increasing costs. As companies expand into emerging markets,
there is a tendency to increase its operating costs. They need to establish new structures and buy
new equipment. These purchases are quite expensive and the companies may end up spending a
lot of funds. Again, energy consumption also increases as firms expand. The energy expenses
may reduce a firm’s profitability thus threatening its sustainability (Mangan, Lalwani, & Lalwani,
2016).
Another challenge that comes with expansion is pollution. More harmful gases and effluents are
released into the environment. Companies are forced to spend more on pollution control and
management. Such expenses threaten the stability of these companies in future. Therefore, it is
necessary for such companies to think about sustainability and the future stability of their
businesses. Many investors think that logistics sustainability is a time consuming and expensive
process. However, it is a fundamental process that helps companies in the transportation
industries to maximize their outputs and reduce their costs without having to impact the
environment negatively (Anderson, & Mitchell 2016).
This paper analyzes the tools, programs and partnerships that can be used to improve logistics
sustainability. It uses a case study of Honeycutt Warehouse and Shipping Company. It is owns
and runs a transportation fleet and also provides warehousing services. The company has a plan
to expand its operations into new emerging markets. The expansion is faced with various
challenges that can only be solved with the help of tools and programs that will reduce energy
consumption, waste products and environmental pollution (Zijm, Klumpp, Clausen, & Hompel 2015).
