Description

Write a book review on A People's History of the Second World War: Resistance versus Empire by Donny Gluckstein , between 1200-1750 words in length.

Your review should have at least two goals: First, to describe the content of the book, and second, to provide a critical evaluation that gives your thoughts of the book’s quality.

Your introduction should include a thesis statement: What was the book about, and what is your critical opinion. (Hint: When I write, sometimes, I am unclear as to what my thesis is until I have written the the paper. It can work to write (or at least revise) your introduction after the rest of your paper is finished).

Do not spend more than one-third (total) of the paper summarizing the book. The summary should consist of a discussion and highlights of the major arguments, features, trends, concepts, themes, ideas, and characteristics of the book. While you may use direct quotes from the book (make sure you always give the page number), such quotes should never be the bulk of the summary. Much of your grade will depend on how well you describe and explain the material in your own words.

Throughout your paper, interspersed with the summary, I want you to provide a critique of the book. Demonstrate that you know the author’s argument, that you understand the evidence he provides, and discuss why you find the argument compelling (or not).

A People's History of the Second World War: Resistance versus Empire Book Review
Till date, many books and articles argue that the Second World War was a battle between
the axis and the allies. This idea has been permeated and underpinned in the mainstream to the
point that it becomes challenging to convince readers otherwise. Gluckstein central argument is
that the people’s war accompanied the imperialist war. The two wars ran parallel to each other
when the significant events between 1939 and 1945 were unfolding. However, the two wars were
different and distinct from each other because one was operating from above and the other one
was developing from below. Unlike many other scholars who wrote about what was the cause
and the origin of the Second World War, Gluckstein offers a different perspective with
compelling facts to validate his assertions that there two parallel wars.
Gluckstein points out that the people’s war is often neglected despite the fact that it had a
great impact in placing the world in its current position. The Second World War was considered
a battle for freedom and democracy by the ruling class. In the society, there have always been
two extremes where there is one group which is composed of the ruling class and the ordinary
folks. The ruling class tends to place themselves at an upper hand as compared to the ordinary
folks. This group is composed of the most influential individuals in the society, and they tend to
dictate how ot...
