Benjamin Butler was a Massachusetts politician and Union officer who fought for the rights of workers and African-Americans 2. He expected everyone to love him and respect him 3. He was a successful lawyer During the war: 1. He lost his first military encounter at Big Bethel 2. He was transferred to Fort Monroe Hampton, Virginia where he became the first union commander to identify runaway slaves. 3. He also commanded several regiments of African American troops who saw action in the Battle of New Market Heights and served with distinction. After the war: 1. He later returned to private life and expanded his business interests. 2. He returned to politics, and was elected governor of Massachusetts in 1882 after several unsuccessful campaigns. In 1878, he was once again elected to Congress, and was a presidential candidate during the election of 1884. 3.
