Introduction
The novel, this is my story” by Elston (2017) has a lot to say about peer pressure in the
society. The author has relied on the predicaments of the five boys who went swimming in a
river and the aftermath of their adventure to illustrate how the young people in the society get
lured into actions and activities that may undermine their future. In particular, the author of this
novel is clearly illustrating how the young men in the society have in one way or another been
directed to harm and troubled after succumbing to peer pressure from their peers and colleagues.
This has been particularly illustrated by the move to go swimming in the river, where the five
river point boys have fun in the river but to their surprise, one of them drawn and dies. There is a
clear indication that the five river point boys are piling pressure on each other to take actions that
are risky and would put them in trouble as the story unfolds. They do not want to reveal
whatever had happened to Gran, one of their colleague at the river as they had fun due to the peer
pressure that creates fear and uncertainty among them.
Discussion
The shooting of Grant, a high school student at the river point as he had fun with four
other boys marks the beginning of the influence of peer pressure as depicted in the novel. The
body language of the other four boys who escape unhurt revel some elements of peer pressure to
hide the truth about what exactly transpired at the scene of the incident that claimed the life of
one of them (Elston, 2017). However, one Kate finds it difficult to succumb to the peer pressure
and decided to go against the objectivity of the agreement between the boys to keep the incident
a secret.
The wowing of Kate to impassionate the true killer of Grant is an illustration of the peer
pressure that the river point boys have put on themselves to conceal the identity of the real

perpetrator of the shooting at the river point (Elston, 2017). In addition, they ploy to have Grant
to impersonate Shep is also the work of peer pressure among the five river point boys to have all
the issues in the scene concealed and not to make them public even after investigation are
launched.
Even as the matter gains momentum and thorough investigations are launched, the four
friends of Gran collude and pile pressure on each other to remain silent about the occurrences at
the river (Elston, 2017). All this time, Kate is besotted and is ready to go against all odds to
