Introduction
International financial institutions like the World Bank and the IMF perform essential roles
in the political, social, and economic development of a country by offering financial support and
other forms of assistance. The World Bank is categorized as a multilateral development bank with
a purpose of financing and advising borrower countries about development while the IMF is an
example of a Bretton Woods Institution that was created after the Second World War to help in
the reconstruction of the affected nations (Chaturvedi, 2012). For developing countries, these
institutions finance and provide other forms of support for overall development. One such country
is India. India is considered as a developing country even after more than sixty years since attaining
independence. There are various factors behind the lack of development. Some of them include
inequality towards income as more than 25% of the total population live under the poverty
threshold, and lack of control in the population growth as the country has a population growth rate
of 1.2% (Chaturvedi, 2012). However, the actions of these institutions could be either be helpful
or detrimental to this country. This discourse explores the impact of this funding on India’s
development, the significance of the healthy population to the economic development and how the
country’s leadership has used this funding to enhance the healthcare system.
