1. Briefly describe the concept of status.
Status is the position an individual holds in a certain setting and it portrays how other people
assign him respect and influence in a relationship. Status is the rank an individual holds when
compared to other people in an organizational environment. Through social interactions with
other people, individuals get a sense and purpose of life which is achieved by creating social
structures that prompt our behavior. Understanding status allows one to appreciate their position
in the society and allows the formation of a hierarchy in a group or particular organization
(Trompenaars, & Hampden-Turner, 2012).
In an organization setting, status enables a smooth flow of expectations and information.
Status can be established by the power or authority an individual demonstrates over others. For
instance, my supervisor has been accorded a high status because he has demonstrated that he can
control outcomes effectively through the use of authority and power. The influence an individual
exerts on an organizations’ goal is affected by the status they hold. An individual’s status can
also be defined based on their personality, intellect or wealth (Primecz, Romani, & Sackmann,
2011)

2. Describe the global implications that status has for an international manager in Western
culture, with two (2) original examples.
Effective application of cross cultural teams provides an innovative source of experience
and thinking which facilitates competitive positions in organizations. However, in a multicultural
global business community, cultural variances may affect the successful completion of projects
and other business deals. According to Branine (2011), cross-cultural management describes

how people behave in various organizations around the world and shows people the best way to
work in organizations that have client populations and employees from different cultures.
In the modern day globalized environment, having an international team has become the
norm all over the world. It is therefore important to understand cultural status and how it affects
the relationships that Eastern or Western international managers have with their employees.
However, in the western culture, status is achieved through hard work and persistence in an
individual’s roles and responsibilities. Knowledge and education in this culture are valued and
are mostly viewed as a chance for any individual to gain status through sheer will and
determination (Schmidt, 2007).
According to the western culture, it doesn’t matter where one comes from or what one
was born with. As long as an individual has excelled and achieved significance through their
actions, the western culture will grant them status. In this culture, an individual’s track record
speaks volumes about their position and the ability to get a higher status solely depends on the
capability of a man or woman to apply oneself and work hard towards their goals (Branine,
2011). For instance, Jack my brother was promoted through the ranks after showing his prowess
and abilities in the IT department. However, in order to facilitate effective completion of projects
and achievement of goals the project manager or supervisor should be culturally sensitive in
order to promote originality by motivating people through effective leadership.
Other global implication an international manager in the western culture could experience
is the perspective of equality. In these cultures, the idea of equality cuts through all dimensions
and a leader is not perceived more important than the rest. For instance, an international manager
in the Western culture is likely to give credibility to an individual who is always punctual by
basing his analysis on the western orientation, background and beliefs that time is money. On the
