Description

In 1300 words, answer the following questions in APA format with three scholarly sources.

  1. Using research and your own experience, explain why reliance on legacy systems will limit the ability of an organization to adopt SOA on a large scale. What mitigation steps can be taken to help transition legacy systems to service orientation?
  2. Using research and your own experience, explain why the initial investment in using a SOA solution requires a high level of adoption to be worthwhile. What are the limitations of using SOA for short term software solutions instead of as a long-term commitment?
  3. Choose three of the goals from the SOA Manifesto (available at www.soa-manifesto.org) and explain how they could be fulfilled in a current generation (Web 2.0) Web service. What qualities of Web services allow each of these goals to be fulfilled?
  4. Evaluate the effect on Return on Investment (ROI) if a service is used for only one composition in a service inventory. How does this compare to the ROI for a single-use software system in traditional software development?

Running Head: UNDERSTANDING SERVICE ARCHITECTURE

Reliance on Legacy System to SOA
Service Oriented Architecture is a paradigm for organizing and utilizing distributed capabilities
that may be under the control of different ownership domains . It can be noted with concerns
that the approach to system Oriented architecture by the organizations has declined, especially in
the modern society. This is due to some of the business operations still thriving despite that their
systems were put in place many years and therefore the organizations may not see the need to
adopting a new kind of system like Service-Oriented Architecture. They don't see the essence of
having a new system or adapting to a new system yet they can still function well with the
existing system, why pay attention to something that is working well and this has made
companies to limit the use of SOA
The Need for a new Hardware
Every new system requires hardware requirements according to the compatibility with the
system regardless of business size. For businesses using the legacy system, making the required
transition or rather adopting the use of new system such as the use of Service-Oriented
Architecture becomes a problem, in most cases new hardware demands upgrading the operating
system to meet the intended system to be used which sometimes and, in most cases, prohibit the
use of old system (Sprott &Wilkes, 2004).
This means that if the organization insist on using their own legacy system and running it on
newer hardware, they usu...
