When I saw the prisoner step aside to avoid the puddle, I saw the mystery, the unspeakable wrongness, of cutting a life short when it is in full tide" (par. 10). In "The Death of the Death Penalty, David von Drehle argues that “Americans have stuck with grim determination to the idea of the ultimate penalty even as other Western democracies have turned against it" (2). How does that affect our society and our humanity? Does data support policies which maintain the death penalty? Answer in 4-5 well-developed paragraphs. Your essay should have a strong thesis and a clear plan of development, and should incorporate ideas or evidence from both the STORY and the ARTICLE to help explain your position. You may also cite other sources, such as the 8th Amendment, as well as your own observations and experience. Write legibly in blue or black ink. Skip every other line, and write only on the front side of your paper. Remember to spend a few minutes planning your essay before writing.
