Exercise 11 – 1

1. Examples of genetically modified crops with positive effects
Genetically Modified Crops are typical plants whose DNA has been modified
through genetic engineering methods. For instance, cotton seeds and jatropha are the
most common modified crops which provide significant benefits to the society.
According Masip, Gemma, et al (312-324), genetically modified crops uphold production
of large yields hence promoting efficient use of land. Additionally, the genetic modified
crops also create better weed, pest and disease resistant.
2. Examples of genetically modified crops with negative effects
On the other hand, some of the genetically modified crops pose negative effects to
the society. For instance, corns are highly produced globally but liberate negative effects
that lead to critical health problems such as organ disruption. Soy is another genetically
crop that exert negative impacts on the society. As Cummins, Ronnie & Ben (78-87)
points out, excessive consumption of soy leads birth defects, sterility, allergies and
increased offspring death rate.

3. Pros and cons of genetically modified crops
Pros
➢ The genetically modified crops are protected from diseases and pests. Therefore,
genetically modified plants are at higher chances of surviving than the plants without the
modifications.
➢ The crops are also friendly to the environment as they conserve soil, water and energy.
➢ The genetic modified crops have large components of nutrients and better taste as well.
Cons
➢ Genetically modified crops are potential health risk causative such as antibiotic
resistance, allergies and as organ disruption.
➢ Stimulates appetite
4.

Should GMO be allowed to manufacture food products?
In my viewpoint perspective, the genetically modified crops should be included in

food manufacture as they lead to increase crop yield, reduce...
