Writing

Description

Because good writing is always a process, our persuasive essay will be written in two parts: a first draft due this week and a revision due in week 6. Your paper should be approximately 3-4 pages in length.

As you prepare, here are a few reminders for this week's draft:

  1. In week 3 you posted a thesis for peer review. Consider the feedback you received, refine your thesis, and use it the basis for your persuasive paper.
  1. Use your sources to support your thesis. Research and prepare the passages you will consider using. Remember to review methods of paraphrasing, summarizing, and using direct quotations. You should cite at least five sources in the body of your essay, and at least three of those sources should come from the Rasmussen College Online Library.
  1. Prepare the body paragraphs by deciding where to place supporting information. Remember, each paragraph of the paper should act to build the momentum of the argument.
  1. Apply pathos, logos, and ethos whenever possible.
  1. Finally, remember that it's okay if your ideas, opinions, or sources change during process of writing this paper. Writing makes us think, and it's fine - even beneficial - to have our thoughts change as we express them on paper.

Running Head: ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY 1 Annotated Bibliography Kia Fenger Rasmussen College 05/27/18 ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY 2 Collier, C. W. (2013, Summer). Gun Control in America: An Autopsy Report. Dissent, 60(3), 81-86. The article looks at gun ownership and gun control in the U.S., as of 2013. It cites recent fatal shootings, including the Florida shooting of Trayvon Martin allegedly by neighborhood watch member George Zimmerman and the mass shootings in a Connecticut elementary school and a Colorado movie theater, all in 2012. The author presents a case for the view that such events are inevitable in the U.S. as long as a high number of guns are present and as long as Americans accept the idea of a largely unlimited right to own guns. Topics include mental illness and gun violence, individualism, and the political debate over gun control. McGinty, E. E., Wolfson, J. A., Sell, T. K., & Webster, D. W. (2016, February). Detailed Record Title: Common Sense or Gun Control? Political Communication and News Media Framing of Firearm Sale Background Checks after Newtown. Journal of Health Politics, Policy & Law, 4(1), 3-40. Gun violence is a critical public health problem in the United States, but it is rarely at the top of the public policy agenda. The 2012 mass shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, opened a rare window of opportunity to strengthen firearm policies in the United States. In this study, they examine the American public's exposure to competing arguments for and against federal- and state-level universal background check laws, which would require a background check prior to every firearm sale, in a large sample of national and regional news stories (n = 486) published in the year following the Newtown shooting. Competing messages about background check laws could influence the outcome of policy debates by ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY 3 shifting support and political engagement among key constituencies such as gun owners and conservatives. We found that news media messages in support of universal background checks were fact-based and used rational arguments, and opposing messages often used rights-based frames designed to activate the core values of politically engaged gun owners. Refraining supportive messages about background check policies to align with gun owners' and conservatives' core values could be a promising strategy to increase these groups' willingness to vocalize their support for expanding background checks for firearm sales. Taylor, D. (2013, April). Gun-Free Zones: Weighing the Pros and Cons. Parks & Recreation, 48(4), 55-55. This article offers information on contrasting views of people related to allowing guns in parks and recreation areas in the U.S along with its advantages and disadvantages. It discusses the ineffectiveness of the background-check process in public areas and states that trained people with gun can control critical situations in public places. Concealed-carry laws allow certain individuals who pass a background check and usually a training course, with specifics depending on the state, to carry a handgun or other weapon in public in a concealed manner. It further discusses several laws related to keeping guns in parks and recreation areas. Wolf, C. R., & Rosen, J. A. (2015, Fall). MISSING THE MARK: GUN CONTROL IS NOT THE CURE FOR WHAT AILS THE U.S. MENTAL HEALTH SYSTEM. Journal of Criminal Law & Criminology, 104(4), 851-878. ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY 4 Recent gun control legislation aimed at removing guns from the hands of the mentally ill in order to reduce violence is misguided. In fact, this only contributes to the mistaken belief that there is a direct link between mental illness and violence. This Article suggests that instead, policymakers should be focusing on modifying existing restrictive mental health laws and increasing the funding needed to provide adequate mental health services in the community. Family members, the community, and the individuals themselves must have access to adequate resources and support systems to increase the individual's chance of recovery and stability. In light of recent tragedies, a better solution to reducing gun violence includes offering community programs and preventive training in educational and workplace environments to allow for early detection and intervention. The current system does not support those in need of treatment and only serves to exacerbate the stigma associated with mental illness. Younge, G. (2016, November 7). WHY THE GUN-CONTROL MOVEMENT FAILS. The Nation, 303(19), 12-15. This article discusses failures of the gun-control movement in the U.S. and the lack of lobbying from Black American citizens in low-income communities. Topics include the #BlackLivesMatter initiative, acquittal of George Zimmerman in the death of Trayvon Martin as well as fatal shooting of Michael Brown by police in Ferguson. Also mentioned are annual convention of the National Rifle Association (NRA) in Charlotte, North Carolina as well as the Mother of Murdered Offspring organization.

GUN CONTROL LAWS SHOULD INFRINGE ON RIGHTS OF THE US CITIZENS

The question of gun control has become a controversial issue in the society. Some people
argue that gun control should be implemented while others argue against it. The question as to
whether the gun control should be implemented and enforced has raised a lot of differences in
the American politics with the activists for gun control and those for gun rights raising their
views on the matter on why the law should or should not be implemented. This paper seeks to
show that gun control laws infringe upon the right to self-defense and deny people a sense of
safety.
Gun ownership by the citizens is protected by the United States constitution's second
amendment. Quoting the second amendment, McGinty, Wolfson, Sell, and Webster (2016,
February) say, “a well-regulated militia is necessary to the security of a free state, and the right
of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.” From this, one can legally state
without fear of contradiction that it is unconstitutional to implemented laws aimed at preventing
the people from owning and carrying firearms. The law supports the ownership of the firearms
by individuals, which is not connected to one’s involvement in the militia, for lawful use. The
significance of this is that it allows the gun owners to use the...
